About  Michaela

A passion for art and a love of nature has always been a part of my life. I can never recall a time even from my earliest childhood when I did not have a paintbrush in my hand. I spent several years painting various watercolour scenes and sold them at art and crafts fairs. For a time I specialised in commissioned watercolour paintings of children in various surroundings. I still undertake commissions today and am able to work with most subject matter.

I have always allowed myself time to pursue and develop my personal creativity through my love of art. Working with Nature is so important to all of us if we want a better tomorrow. We must take care of our planet, if we do, it will take care of us. Through my art I want to preserve and share with others what we so easily take for granted.

Seashells are amazing and I truly believe each tiny shell is a work of art in itself. I had done some beachcombing  in Portugal where seashells were in huge abundance, and I brought a large selection of them back to the UK with me. I wanted to create something with them that no - one else had thought of, and decided to concentrate on mosaics, then all the ideas came flooding in!

My collages differ from all others because I use mixed media, by combining my painting, with the gifts of nature – sand, seashells, plants, stone, driftwood…

My designs are worked on boxed canvases, all of which are from sustainable sources. All my collages include covering the sides of the canvas to give an overall 3D feel and effect. I always use whole seashells so their beauty can be fully appreciated. All my mosaics are made up of several different types of seashell. Adding real sand to the canvas makes my pictures come to life, I believe my art designs are unique, as I have never seen anything like this before. I have been developing my particular style of art now for several years, and never tire of beachcombing for new materials on Crete’s many shorelines. I have always loved the beautiful island of Crete, so whenever I spend time here, I always feel it is the perfect place to be inspired!
